101 in 1001 Update
I updated my 101 in 1001 list today--progress is slowly being made! A few highlights...
Newberry Winners (Goal #10)
Just finished reading the winner from 1932. Overall, I'm suprised at how boring many of them seem compared to the children's fiction of today! Lots of historical-type novels and also lots of folk tale collections packaged in different ways.
Caldecott Winners (Goal # 81)
I'm up to 1957 on these, and again am suprised at the contrast with current fiction. Nathan has been interested in very few--too young for most, and I think some would be difficult to interest any child in! Classic favorites are Madeline, The Biggest Bear, and Make Way for Ducklings. So far I haven't rediscovered any lost treasures.
Guests (Goal # 73)
We're enjoying this one--always someone new and interesting to share a meal with! Our most recent guest was a student from Than's junior high group in Idaho Falls. He shared 3 days with us before heading home.
Scrapbook (Goal #56)
Wow! Nathan's first year is officially finished, printed, and in his book! It is much longer than I had expected, so I am trying to decide before starting his next year if I want to aim towards brevity or towards completeness. It is so hard to leave pictures out, but I know from personal experience that a book that is too long is a book people just don't look at!
Reading (Goal #9)
I'm going slow on this one, spending more time reading books from my Newberry list than from my "I want to read" list. I just finished my first one, called Train Go Sorry. It was written by a hearing woman who was raised at Lexington School for the Deaf (her parents worked there). I always enjoy a reminder of my degree, my interest in this subject, and a challenge to think about the complexities of the issues there.
Leave Nathan (Goal #79)
Thanks to the Brauns, we were able to do this the night we saw Josh Groban (see post here). It is a little easier now that he is older, but I still feel bad for whoever has to take him!
Progress continues...
