Quote 22

"If we had no winter, the spring would not be so pleasant; if we did not sometimes taste adversity, prosperity would not be so welcome." --Anne Bradstreet

There are lots of quotes in this early part of my database about adversity and trials--who knows why! I guess in the beginning I was just collecting things that sounded motivational, since I just deleted several quotes before posting this one because they were just corny "tomorrow is a better day" kind of ones. I like this one, though, because it reminds me of the importance of contrast. I usually see contrast as a bad thing at first--the difference between what I have and what I want, or between where I am and where I would like to be. This reminds me that contrast actually helps me appreciate the good things, whether or not I am experiencing them at the moment. At a most important level, the true reality is that I would not appreciate God's love and grace to me if I did not understand the extent of my sinfulness and my need for Him (a thought brought up by our church study of Romans, see here...). Contrast is crucial (and spring always comes after winter, so there is hope!!)
