Quote 28

It was a high counsel that I once heard given to a young person, "Always do what you are afraid to do." --Ralph Waldo Emerson

After deleting a Ralph Waldo Emerson quote that had very little importance, this one was next in line. I think sometimes fear is a good warning sign that something is wrong, but as a very timid person I think I often use fear to keep me from doing what is right, necessary, good for my growth, or good for other people. As a Christian, fear doesn't have to rule my decisions. Romans 8:15 says "For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship." I am a daughter of the King--why be afraid? But I am, of so many things--the big ones being what people think of me, what people expect me to do, and whether something is easy and safe for me. Buried in most of my fears I think is a real reticence, even a sinful resistance, to doing what the Holy Spirit is prompting me to do. Perhaps if I examined more closely WHY fear keeps me from doing something, I would discover, like this quote says, that the very thing I fear is the thing that would be best for me to do.
