Goal #14--Lawrence of Arabia

In my ongoing quest to watch classic Academy Award Best Picture winners, Than and I braved the 2 DVD set of Lawrence of Arabia. Winning the Oscar in 1962, the film was definitely paced much differently than movies we are used to. There were some incredibly lengthy "riding on a camel through the desert" scenes, accompanied by the classic theme music in countless variations of the same few measures. The story felt rather dreary and depressing by the end, perhaps because it reflects the reality of the incredible difficulty of making any progress in the Middle East given the violence, disunity, and independence of various groups that live there. The film did give a good sense of what desert life might have been like, and I realized I'd never really watched someone ride a camel that closely before! It is amazing to realize that the huge travel and battle scenes featuring screen-fulls of Bedouins and camels were all real, not computer-generated images. I can't imagine trying to get that many camels to behave themselves! All in all, we survived the movie and now know what the allusions to it are talking about, but I can't say that I'd reccommend it if you're trying to stay awake!
