Quote
"For what I have received may the Lord make me truly thankful. And more truly for what I have not received." --Storm Jameson
This quote grabbed me today in light of some of the stresses of the past few days. Too often I am disgruntled because I focus on what I wanted to get and don't have. Instead of new circumstances (which are at times impossible to get anyway) I need a new perspective--gratitude for what I am so richly blessed with and an awareness of all of the disasters and evils that God has chosen to keep away. True thankfulness should be for God and His love shown in my life, not just for surface satisfaction with a moment in time. In an attempt to cultivate more true gratitude, I submit the following short list...
I am thankful for...
...a house that is full of things that are loved, comforting, and useful.
...children who can wiggle or run, coo or chatter, smile, laugh, learn and grow.
...money to buy good food, not just any food.
...a country where good food is easily and safely available.
...a husband who loves rather than hurts, who cherishes rather than tears down.
...a God who is faithful no matter what I do.
...5 hours of sleep instead of 4 or 3 or 2.
...out-of-practice piano skills rather than none at all.
...a healthy body to care for others who aren't doing so well.
...the Holy Spirit to readjust my heart and attitude.
May I continue to work on being grateful for all the good and the lack of so much bad.
