Topeka
OK, OK, strange as it sounds the first stop on our vacation was Topeka. After about 8-9 hours of driving (with the kids doing suprisingly well, all in all) we arrived at our hotel around 5 p.m. We had pizza at a local pizzeria, then walked around a beautiful nearby rose garden before enjoying the hotel swimming pool and heading for bed. 
In the morning, we went back to nearby Gage Park and spent the morning playing at the various playgrounds, riding the little train, walking through the gardens, and revisiting the roses. 
We also drove downtown to view some exquisite stained glass windows made by Tiffany in a Presbyterian church. Lunch at a local drive-in, then on the road for St. Louis!!
